How to use the word and character counter
Overview
This tool helps you count both words and characters in any piece of text. It supports multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Bengali, Turkish, Malay, Indonesian, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, and Urdu, so you get an accurate count no matter which language you're writing in.
Steps to use the tool
- Enter or paste your text. In the text box above, start typing or paste any text you want to analyze. You can enter text in any supported language, or even mix multiple languages in the same box.
- Check the character count. The "Characters" figure shows the total number of characters in your text, and a separate figure shows the count with spaces removed — for example, "Hello World" is 11 characters with spaces, 10 without.
- Check the word count. The "Words" figure counts every word in your text, including words with special characters like ñ, ç, or accented letters, and words written in non-Latin scripts.
- Review sentences and reading time. The tool also estimates how many sentences your text contains and roughly how long it would take an average reader to read it out loud.

Tips for accurate counting
- Spaces between words are ignored in the "characters without spaces" count, but they're what separates one word from the next in the word count.
- Punctuation and special characters are included in the character count, but they don't count as separate words. For example, "I'm good!" is 9 characters and 2 words.
- Line breaks and paragraph spacing count toward your character total, so a heavily formatted document will show a slightly higher character count than the same text written as one paragraph.
